Website Update #1

Hello, world! Here’s a web site development update.

In the background, there has been a number of items undergoing development and upgrade over the last six weeks. We are happy to announce that these items are closing in on release, and we will be starting a progression of deployments starting next week. The first of which will be a new site layout that will enable a more flexible content display and intuitive navigation system.

  • External User Blog Feeds
  • User Points & Rewards Systems
  • User Rating System for Content
  • Data Center Jobs Listing
  • User Messaging Services
  • User Profiles & Dynamic Content Display
  • Industry Events Calendasr
  • SSL & OpenID

You may have also noticed that we moved from the datacenterpulse.org to datacenterpulse.com domain, and in fact will shortly be moving back to .org. This unfortunately, was due to the fact that within a week to closing out the old .com site, we ended up also needing to move hosting providers for the new .org site. As we are continuing down the Non-Profit route, the .org domain makes best since in the long run, and will help us finalize our email and addresses systems.

Going forward, we will continue to permanently redirect .com items to .org, to the best of our ability so as to elevate confusion. Search however will take some time to counter correct.

As always, any questions or comments can be sent to feedback@datacenterpulse.org

Summit Results

On February 17th, 2009 Data Center Pulse held its first global summit in Santa Clara California, just five short months after starting this new end user datacenter community. The membership, 700 strong, identified seven of the top areas they wanted to address at this summit. The final topics and participants were finalized on the day of the event.

  • TRACK 101 - The Top Ten
  • TRACK 102 - Metrics
  • TRACK 103 - Certification
  • TRACK 104 - The Power Trip
  • TRACK 105 - Fanless Servers, Conductive cooling
  • TRACK 106 - Cloud computing
  • TRACK 107 - Industry Alignment

Each track was lead by group members. Even in these difficult economic times more than 15% of the membership base participated in person and online, some members traveling from as far away as Chile to participate in this inaugural event.

Data Center Pulse Community Breaks 500!

1/1/2009 DCP Membership breaks 500!

Today the Data Center Core membership broke 500 members representing over 300 customer companies in 26 countries in 22 different industries. The membership base is growing rapidly.

The Data Center Pulse: INDUSTRY group that was started on November 20, 2008 has already hit 360 members in less that 53 days.

As our parents used to say, we should shoot for the moon. Our original goal was to hit 1,000 members by the end of 2008. We were short of that goal but with the core and industry membership we are close to that goal now.

With the momentum that DCP is gaining through efforts such as the DCP Global Summit and the industry independent efficiency test, “The Chill Off 2”, we expect to meet 1,000 core members by Summer, 2009.

Please share the DCP vision with your industry peers and encourage them to join either the Data Center Pulse core group or Data Center Pulse: INDUSTRY through LinkedIN.

DCP YouTube Channel Opens

The Data Center Pulse podcast received great response from the first two Episodes “Introduction” and “The Chill Off” but there were many around the world that were unable to view the quicktime segments. Because of this, the Data Center Pulse podcast has been extended to our own DCP YouTube channel. This will reach a much larger audience through the incredible YouTube interface.

Please take the time to bookmark the channel link and subscribe to the channel. Watch this channel for updates on all things DCP.

DCP Takes on the Chill Off 2

In June 2007, Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG) held a Data Center Energy Summit at Sun Microsystems Santa Clara, CA Campus. This summit showcased 13 demonstration projects from participants all over the Sliicon Valley. One of the most intriguing projects was the Chill Off. An effort to compare cooling technologies side by side to see how efficient they were. The results were presented by Dean Nelson from Sun Microsystems and Tim Xu from Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBNL) along with a panel of the participating companies. A summary of this event was captured in Dean Nelson’s blog.

In October 2008, Sun Microsystems signed up for the Chill Off 2 to expand the testing that was done in 2007. Not only would the testing increase the rack densities from 11kW to 30kW, it added five more layers that addressed many of the areas that Data Center owners and operators were challenged with. Coordination quickly began to line up the multi-layered DC test stack.

On Friday November 14, 2009, Data Center Pulse became an official sponsor of the Chill Off 2 because of the independent, unbiased effort that the it represents. Data Center Pulse members are leading the 2008/2009 efforts including program management, test coordination, hosting and reporting. All Chill Off updates will be reported through the datacenterpulse.org website.

A video summary podcast has been created to introduce the industry to the effort. it is also posted on the Datan Ceter Pulse YouTube channel. A blog detailing the weekly activities will be posted on datacenterpulse.org soon.

Data Center Pulse: INDUSTRY group created

Since the start of the Data Center Pulse on September 13, 2009, we have had to turn away hundreds of very talented and passionate datacenter professionals because they didn’t meet the DCP membership criteria. This ranged from reporters to CEOs. We decided to open up a parallel group that would be be open to all professionals in the Data Center Industry.

On November 20, 2008 Data Center Pulse: INDUSTRY group was created on LinkedIN. Over 50 people joined on the first day. The goal is to have an easy reach into the general DC industry population. The DCP Core membership, DCP board of Directors and upcoming DCP Technical Advisory Board wanted to easily interface with these professionals yet keep the anonymity of the member base.

Please share this group with your peers in the Data Center Industry.
